Open for Online and In-Person Lessons

We hope you are all doing well, staying safe, and rockin’ hard in your online lessons! Hamilton is currently in the “red zone” and we are now open for online and in-person lessons!

Here are all of the ongoing and updated health and safety measures we will be implementing:

  • We will continue doubling up on our sanitization of common areas and lesson rooms.
  • We are going to ask that parents please briefly enter and exit the building as we are trying to keep indoor traffic to a minimum. Seating inside the lobby is being reserved for students only.
  • Upon entry please make sure you and your child sanitize your hands at the desk by the door.
  • During lessons, all students will still be required to wear a mask for the entire duration of their classes. Breaks will be given to students in 1-hour lessons to remove their masks if necessary.
  • Plastic has been installed in all vocal lesson rooms to keep vocalists separated from their teachers while singing.
  • We have marked the floors in each lesson room with an ‘X’ as a ‘social distancing’ marker. This marker is common in the music industry for auditions! We will be using them as an additional safety precaution, learning tool and a source for inspiration for each student.

All of Studio E group classes will still be running as usual, with a bit more caution. We are keeping class sizes to a minimum, masks will still be mandatory, and the fun will be brought to the MAX!

If you have any concerns or need to take additional precautions, we are still offering online lessons via Zoom! Studio E teachers in every discipline are well versed in Zoom and teaching online. We are more than happy to continue teaching you or your child during their same time slot, just online!

We are here for each of you and want you to know the safety and education of you and your children is our top priority! We here at Studio E want you to feel safe and comfortable. We believe that the arts heal. They allow us to connect as a community and find our truest selves! We want you and your children to know we are here for you in any way we can be!

Thank you all for your continued support, especially during this uncertain time.

Stay Safe, Stay Healthy … and BE BOLD!

Online Lessons Now Available

Dear Studio E Families,

Thank you all for your patience as we continue to navigate the on-going situation surrounding COVID-19. We are committed to the health and safety of our teachers, staff, students, and parents. With precautions and advisories changing almost daily, we believe we have found a solution that will work going forward. Although many businesses and recreational programs have begun to re-open, we have been in touch with various provincial government officials who have been unable to provide a clear answer as to whether we are able to open for in-person lessons … But we think we have found a solution for the time being!

Effective Monday, July 6th, all private lessons will resume online. Over the coming week, we will be contacting all students who were enrolled in lessons prior to our closure on March 17th to confirm scheduling for their online lessons. Students enrolled in group classes will also be contacted to discuss how each class will proceed. As soon as we receive clearance, students will be given the option to continue their lessons online or in-person, but until then, lessons will be online only.

We understand that the transition to online lessons may be challenging. We will be sending you more information about how to make sure you are prepared for yours or your child’s music lesson(s). We are confident that our teachers will continue to provide the quality of instruction that you have come to expect from Studio E and look forward to trying out this new lesson format.

Again, we appreciate your patience and support during this time and we cannot wait to begin our online lessons! Please be on the look-out for future emails from us and keep an eye on our social media channels for more Zoom parties and virtual events.

Sincerely,

Teresa Nocita

A letter to our families …

On March 17th, 2020, the government of Ontario made an order declaring an emergency under section 7.0.1 (1) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act in response to COVID-19, allowing the government to exercise sweeping powers to respond to the emergency. On March 23, 2020, the government of Ontario announced the mandatory closure of all non-essential workplaces for an initial 14-day period, effective Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at 11:59pm.
Studio E is closed and will remain so until instructed by the Canadian Government and as such, we have paused all pre-authorized payments. All emails will be responded to and any questions or concerns will be addressed once we are open. We ask that everyone remain patient as we are all experiencing unprecedented actions.
On behalf of myself and our entire team of staff, I would like to thank you all for your continued support during this difficult time. Our priority is the well being of our students, their families and our staff. Please follow our updates on Facebook and Instagram as we continue to keep you all aware of the daily changes as they arise.
Once again, thank you for your continued support, stay safe and healthy.
Sincerely,
Teresa Nocita

COVID-19 UPDATE

Dear Parents & Families,
With the growing concern surrounding COVID-19, the health, safety, and well-being of our employees and our families is our primary concern.
First and foremost, we want to assure our students and their families that we are taking all of the appropriate measures to ensure that our facility is safe and that we have existing plans and training protocols in place to ensure they stay that way.
We have increased the level of contact cleaning at the studio. We have come up with a schedule to clean contact areas such as wiping down handles, pianos, guitars, microphones, and drumsticks between students to help prevent the spreading of germs with these preventative measures:
  1. Any staff member that shows any signs of flu symptoms is asked to stay home.
  2. In the meantime, we have put away all the magazines, books and toys.
  3. We ask that any student who has the flu or flu-like symptoms (cough, fever, difficulty breathing, etc.) to stay home.
  4. We ask that any parent or guardian who accompanies a student (and has the flu or flu-like symptoms) to stay home.
  5. Proper handwashing is key. Notices have been placed in all bathrooms: Remember to wash your hands regularly with soap and water for 20 seconds and try to refrain from touching your face, nose, and eyes as much as possible.
  6. We will be allowing extra make-up lessons for any sick cancellations
These changes, along with Canada’s Public Health recommended measures (http://.www.canada.ca/en/public-heath/services/diseases/coronavirus-disease-cvid-19.html) will help us maintain a healthy workspace for all. As a reminder, we will be closed for regular lessons from Monday, March 16th to Saturday, March 21st. Our March Break camp will continue to run as usual. We will continue to monitor the situation and regularly communicate with you should the need arise. We ask that everyone help ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all who enter our music school.
Sincerely,
Teresa Nocita

Music and Speech Development

At Studio E we often get inquiries from parents with toddlers with speech development problems. Some of the most popular questions are “ Should my child know more words than this?” and “ My child rarely uses language, and only communicates with noises and movements”. As a parent, you are told that music can help your child with speech and language development, but have you ever been told why? In the DiscoverE program at Studio E, we are committed to not only educating children about the wonders of music, but also to educating parents and caregivers about how music can benefit their child.

So how does music help your child in regards to speech and language?

Repetition:

The most successful children’s songs are the ones that use simple and easy to pronounce words, as well as repetition. This formula is something you probably recognize from songs like “Mary had a Little Lamb”, “Head Shoulders Knees and toes”, and the more recent “Baby Shark”.  Producers purposely create songs with this pattern, so that they are easy to remember and also catchy enough to get stuck in your head. As a parent, these “ear worm” songs can be viewed as annoying or ridiculous, but as children the repetition is an amazing way to develop memory and word retrieval skills. Repetition of songs and words can help the child acquire new vocabulary which promotes Auditory Discrimination – the ability to differentiate sounds in language. To add to this experience we can add actions or signals to each word in order to help the children not only remember each word, but understand what that particular phrase is saying.

Sentence Construction:

Music and language are extremely similar. In language we use letters to construct a phrase and in music we use notes and tones. Each time we add a letter to a word, or a tone to a song we are further developing that particular phrases meaning. Music closely mirrors the tempo, pitch and rhythm of normal speaking patterns. As children, we use the musical aspects of language in order to form words and thoughts. This can be seen in ECE classrooms when the educator claps along to the syllable’s of words, or when a child mimics the tone/pitch of a word or phrase being said to them. Children understand that tone indicates feeling way before they learn the meaning of a word or sentence. This is seen when an infant cries because they see someone else crying, or a child stomps their feet when upset. When we introduce music in Early Childhood, it teaches children tone, pitch, timbre and tempo in a way that is easy to grasp and understand. It is also more effective to introduce new words and concepts through songs, because songs are easily repeated and also emotionally stimulating. Early Childhood Music promotes Phonological Awareness which is the ability to identify the sound structure of words which is an incredibly important childhood skill.

In Conclusion:

Music helps with learning the flow and tone of human speech, and learning how to make music can help develop that verbal memory that we need in order to recognize familiar words more easily. When we introduce these musical ideas and concepts to our children we are giving them the opportunity to learn essential skills in a fun and effective way.
